Ask the Rabbi

If I'm going to be taking summer classes and staying in College Park, what type of Jewish life is available for me to be a part of during the summer?

Whatever you make of it. As is the case every year, we at Chabad (the only Shabbat address during the summer months) will be offering Shabbat services and homemade meals, as well as other events and/or services. Please let us know your e-mail and that you will be staying, and we will let you know what will be happening around town. As people travel, etc., you should always check with us and don't just assume that everyone is here.

What is Yom Yerushalayim?

Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) commemorates that on June 7, 1967, during the war which had been started against Israel, Israeli troops crashed through the defenses set up by Arab troops and recaptured those parts of the holy city of Jerusalem, which had previously been in Arab possession. This year, it is May 19, 2004, corresponding to Iyar 28 on the Hebrew calendar.

What advice would you give to graduating students who are going into the “real world” about how to keep Judaism in their lives?

To fail their last exam and stay in college forever. Other than doing that, put yourself in touch with the local Jewish community and become part of it. (We can help you find one almost anywhere you will be going) Look for something young and exciting, so you will enjoy it and stay involved.

How do I go about rescheduling a Saturday final exam if it interferes with my observance of Shabbat?

All you should need is a note from a rabbi, which I can provide to you, and a talk with your professor. The professor will work with you on finding an alternate date and/or a way to make it up. Also. please feel free to contact me if you have any further issues with the rescheduling.

How should I celebrate Lag B'Omer?

As in all celebrations at Maryland — with a bonfire!

In Israel they celebrate Lag B'Omer with bonfires, parties, music and lots of singing and dancing. We have borrowed the style and today, many do the same, even outside of Israel.

Before you “light up,” check with campus authorities.
