ACLU-UM Applauds University Senate for Approving Statement of
Standards and Responsibilities for Students

ACLU-UM, the campus organization leading the fight for
student rights, applauded the University Senate’s vote to
approve the Statement of Standards and Responsibilities for
Students.

“This is a huge step forward for student rights,” said ACLU-
UM President Matt Johnson. “The Senate’s vote demonstrates
the University’s commitment to student rights.”

The Statement identifies rights held by students,
called “standards,” that the university must respect through
policy. The right to hold expectations for courses, freedom
of expression and inquiry, and equality of rights, among
others, are mentioned in the Statement.

The document will serve as a springboard for ACLU-UM as it
continues to advocate for student rights. The organization
will lobby the University to make sure its policies uphold
the rights identified in the statement.

ACLU-UM played an integral role in securing a document that
identifies and strengthens student rights. After proposing
the idea five years ago, the organization worked with the
Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Student Rights and
Responsibilities to draft the statement and lobbied for its
passage.

The Statement awaits President C.D. Mote, Jr.’s signature and
is expected to be implemented this summer.
