Introduction
The
Chinese Graduate Students and Scholars Association (CGSA) E-mail
server is a free E-mail service program designed for the Chinese
graduate students and scholars who have access to the Internet.
The
Internet address of this server is cgsalist@hcs.umd.edu.
The following instructions are designed for the users who have
basic knowledge of E-mail.
Those
who have NOT sent any E-mail before should go to the computer
science center and get the free handout titled "How to use
E-mail".
What
the CGSA E-mail server can do for you
The
CGSA E-mail server has three sub-mailing lists:
-
The "Activity" sublist. Messages in this category
should include the date, the place, and the organizer of a scheduled
event that is open to all the list subscribers.
Announcements made by the CGSA committee will also be included
in this category.
-
The "Sale and Housing" sublist, which covers the advertisement
of sales, room for rent information or a want ad.
-
The "Misc" sublist, which covers anything that cannot
be fitted into the above two sublists, like the information
about sports activities, the job openings, etc.
You
can subscribe to any one of the sublists or broadcast your mail
to any one of the sublists' subscribers. You can also archive
or retrieve certain information by using this server.
How
to use the CGSA E-mail server
The
CGSA E-mail server is very easy to use. You only need to send
E-mail to cgsalist@hcs.umd.edu with a appropriate subject in your
message. If for any reason you did not follow the rules set up
by this server, your message will be bounced back together with
this help file.
- How to subscribe or unsubscribe to the CGSA E-mail server
[
New Procedure to subscribe ]
Send an email to listserv@hcs.umd.edu with the body "subscribe
cgsalist". The subject line of the email will be ignored.
[
New Procedure to unsubscribe ]
Send an email to listserv@hcs.umd.edu with the body "unsubscribe
cgsalist". The subject line of the email will be ignored.
-
How to broadcast your E-mail to certain groups of people through
the server
To
broadcast your E-mail to a group of sublist subscribers, you
should include the sublist name on the subject line of your
E- mail. Please note that you must also include an appropriate
subject of your message on the subject line. Because lots of
E- mail readers will browse the E-mail subject first and decide
whether to read it or not. For instance, if you want to broadcast
your room-for- rent advertisement to the "Sale and Housing"
sublist subscribers, you should put "[Sale and Housing]
Room for Rent" on the subject line, and your message in
the body of the E-mail.
-
How to archive or retrieve information by using the CGSA server
The
CGSA E-mail server can not only be used to broadcast messages
but also can be used to archive and retrieve information. That
is, a user can put a file into the server or get a file from
the server just by sending E-mail. For a list of files you can
get from the CGSA E-mail server, please send E-mail to cgsalist@hcs.umd.edu
with "get list" on the subject line. If you want to
archive your sale or housing advertisement into the server,
please send E-mail with "put ads" on the subject line
of your E-mail ( please note that the body of your message can
not exceed 200 lines). If you want to get the old sale and housing
information, please send E-mail with " get ads" on
the subject line. The archived messages will be updated every
month.
Please
value other peoples time
The
CGSA E-mailing list currently has about 600 subscribers. Please
take your time to read carefully through this file before you
send any E-mail to the server. As a community service program,
the success of this E-mail server depends on the cooperation of
each user. The list maintainer reserves the right to block any
intentional misuse of this server. If you still have questions
about how to use the CGSA E-mail server after reading this file
or you have any comments, please send E-mail to guo@eng.umd.edu.
