A Night of Laughter

****ing Hilarious. The only way to sum up Ralph Nader's visit to the University of Maryland. Where do I begin.. Well
first of all, we were presented with a stellar line-up of intellectual giants. There was a socialist, a populist (neo-commie) and even an
ex-con who had the misfortune of being caught while robbing a bank in his youth.
Then it was time for Peter Camejo. As he reached the podium
a guy in the front row stood up and yelled "Mr. Camejo, why did you send your goons to beat up my friend in Boston!?" After about two minutes of yelling this,
police escorted the fine young gentleman out of the room and Camejo began his speech. This consisted mostly of trashing of the Kerry Administration
and even a reference to Democrats as "a party which slithered out of the sewer."
After Camejo got done speaking, a guy from the Green party started asking for donations.
"Is anyone here willing to give $1,000 to the Ralph Nader campaign?" Silence.
Do I hear $500? - At this point I was laughing to the point of tears. A kid stands up and asks "I'll donate if you can
tell me how you are going to rebuild America's Steel Industry." After about 5 donations between $500 and the $20 dollar level, they passed around a communal
donation box, which I doubt saw much action. Then it was time for Ralph.
Nader's speech was less interesting then my one-button, non-digital watch, which I had more fun fiddling with then listening to him.
I did however, have the opportunity to learn that contrary to what I was originally taught, America is not in fact a Republic. You see, it's actually controlled by heartless
multi-national corporations. Democrats and Republicans? They are actually the same party! Nader's speech was interrupted by another guy yelling "Mr. Nader, why did you send your goons to beat up my friend in Boston!?"
as well as some girl singing some "freedom" song. Both were also escorted out by police. Nader finished soon after these two interruptions and then we ducked out. All in all, a night to remember. Nothing is more
satisfying then watching liberals and ultra-liberals go at each other's throat.

New Membership at the First Look Fair

The First Look Fair was a huge success. Not only did we sign up well over a hundred people, but
roughly two dozen new faces were seen at the meeting Wednesday night.
Thanks to everyone who came out and worked the tables or attended the meeting on Wednesday. Both days the heat was absolutely blistering. Also, special thanks to
the mysterious Dan fellow who randomly showed up with a cache of the always popular Bush Bumper Stickers.

Campaigning in West Virginia Posted By
Christopher Brunk
[ 09/18/2004 ]
A small pack of CRs (including your author) traveled to the UMD-West Virginia Football game this weekend to do a little Bush campaigning in the swing state.
The dozen or so Bush campaign workers managed to fortify thousands with Bush Stickers and GOP event cards. Draped in neutral colors, we were able to do this under the radar
of the extremely hostile fans who would verbally assault everyone wearing Red. This includes a pack of 70+ year old UMD fans, who I watched slowly make their way to the entrance, being
tormented by WVU college students. On the ride home, the consensus in the car was that WVU fans were worse then Philidelphia. I'm not a sports buff, but apparently thats hard to believe.
The game itself was great. UMD lost a close one in overtime after an unbelievable number of fumbles and interceptions.

CRs a Big Hit at the All-Niter Posted By

Our table at the All-Niter was a great success. I wasn't counting, but I'd say we got 30 or more people added to our mailing list. It was also a great opportunity to sharpen our debate skills,
with college democrats to our left and libertarians to our right.
Our organization also had ample representation in the Poker Tournment, with Harrison Hunt, Mike Bandoblu and Bryan Shuy all playing.
The latter two, by the way, came in atleast 10-20th place among the 120+ players.

Clear CR Victory at NAACP Event Posted By
Christopher Brunk
[ 09/14/2004 ]
College Democrats were used as mops tonight when CR representatives
Nathan Kennedy and Bryan Shuy
spoke at the NAACP debate. The somewhat hostile audience was quickly silenced as clear-minded conservative ideology trumped all else, on matters
ranging from education to the tax code. Democrats, busy trying to pin down the GOP as some sort of "pro tax-loophole" party missed any and all opportunities
to defend Kerry's terrible record, or explain how its possible to drive down unemployment and increase minimum wage. This matter, of course, is already addressed
on the 32nd page of my Microeconmics book, stating in plain English "A minimum wage increases unemployment among young and unskilled workers." (N. Gregory Mankiw).
Kerry himself would have been dissapointed, as the two liberal speakers misrepresented his stance on nearly a half-dozen issues, including the war in Iraq
which he now supports.
Needless to say, we thank the NAACP for hosting the event, and wish the college democrats better luck next time.

First Meeting of the Year Posted By
Christopher Brunk
[ 09/09/2004 ]
We held our first meeting of the year at 7:30 last night. It was here that our President Vincent Martorano
outlined the upcoming CR events, now posted on the main page. Former CR President
Harrison Hunt and current Maryland CR Chair
Bryan Shuy also attended, discussing the crucial role college republicans have played in previous elections,
as well as stressing the importance of two local elections, that of
Brad Jewitt and Chuck Floyd. Hunt then digressed for several minutes on just how much fun doing campaign work can be.

RNC Closes with a Bang Posted By

[ 09/03/2004 ]
Bush parties were held coast-to-coast last night, and the UMD College Republicans didn't miss out on the festivities.
The organization met at "Lupo's," a popular restaurant off-campus specializing in Italian Dishes. In addition to listening the
president speak, local congressional candidate
Brad Jewitt stopped by for a visit to rally support for the President and elaborate on his
agenda for the great state of Maryland.
