1. What is DESI?

DESI is a non-profit organization with focused objectives in three areas: exchange of information, charitable activities, and social entertainment.

2. What is the purpose of DESI?

The group encourages members to study and discuss various aspects relating to India, such as the Indian culture, social issues, projection of India’s image in the West, and countering terrorism threats. It aims to hold discussions and talks by eminent personalities at regular intervals. In addition to this, the association would serve as a repository of books on India. Charity aspect will be achieved by associating with existing charity organizations. The group will serve as a means for popularizing and assisting chosen charity organizations. Last but not the least, the group will organize cultural events and social gatherings.

3. When did it start?

DESI started in the Summer of 2003. Initially the name of the group was SUPI (Students or United and Progressive India) which later got changed to DESI (Develop, Empower and Synergize India).

4. Am I eligible to become a member of DESI?

Active membership shall be limited to persons officially connected with the University of Maryland, College Park as faculty, staff or registered students. Students enrolled in the spring semester as well as students enrolled in summer school are eligible for summer membership. In addition, the following requirements are necessary to constitute active membership:

1. Attendance of at least 50% of all meetings during a given semester.
2. Active participation in all activities sponsored by DESI unless the activity interferes with either scholastic or financial constraints.

5. Is there any membership fee?

There is no membership fee; but donations are welcome. DESI openly admits students to its membership and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, personal appearance, age, national origin, political affiliation, physical or mental disability, or on the basis of rights secured by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

6. Where can I get the information about programs organized by DESI?

DESI will be informing its members about the forthcoming events and activities by e-mail through yahoo groups. The member should register with desi_umd@yahoogroups.com to get updated information about the events. Click here to register with the group.
