11 Unanswered, Unasked Questions

By Subodh Atal

About 30 months after the September 11 attacks, there is very little closure for the survivors. The Bush administration has spent the last year attacking a nation that had nothing to do with the attacks, and was very low on a scale of threats that could mirror or exceed the 9/11 carnage: Iraq. That nation is in a shambles, and US credibility is at stake, with the concept of pre-emption, that was born out of the 9/11 attacks now questioned as a deadly case of cry-wolf.

So why is the Bush administration protecting its "tight ally", Musharraf? Does this have something to do with a Bin Laden October Surprise, as Maureen Dowd of the New York Times implies? Does it have to do with the administration's links to the Halliburtons and Bechtels, which may have been much more confident of the profit margins in reconstruction projects in Baghdad and Mosul than in Islamabad and Karachi? Or did operations in Pakistan not fit into the American presidential cycle? MORE
