The Relevance of Ayurveda for Stress Management

Agatha Rodgers

The history of Ayurveda, filled as it is with figures from the Hindu Pantheon may seem alien to our modern perception of medical science; The "Wisdom of Life" as it is called, originated in the Indus Valley circa 3,500 BC.

It is said that it was handed down by the Hindu Creator, Brahma Himself, to a group of Rishis (wise men and Seers) in order to relieve humanity of disease and suffering. The teachings were then transferred to texts outlining 8 disciplines: General Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Surgery, Toxicology, Geriatrics and Sexology thus forming a complete medical system. From those ancient times, the principles of Ayurveda have been passed on from generation to generation through an oral tradition that still refers to the initial texts.

Nowadays you can either study the old ways or study at University for several years. But Ayurveda is not just a medical system as we understand it in our culture;

Things to do with the Press

Arun Shourie

The Premise of democratic governance is that the people will decide. But what will be the character of the decisions they will take when instead of being informed, inspired, when necessary enraged to act on issues, they are distracted and merely entertained?

The notion that journalists must merely be "good professionals" is only a little less pernicious. Albert Speer was a good professional. An assassin is no poorer a professional in his marksmanship than a soldier. The new skills, the new technology, unless permeated by a sense of public purpose will end up enticing us away from the issues which we in any case do not want to face. They will therefore make us even less able to improve our condition.

This ideology of professionalism undermines all a sense of proportion, of all sense of purpose beyond that of getting the applause of one's peers and the audience. On this criterion purveying gossip about film stars well is as laudable as purveying facts about the North-east well. The consequences are immediate and disastrous, not the least for the professional himself.

Whats in a day ?

Arun Sankar Mamphazy

“Have a nice evening Raghu, see you tomorrow”.. Oh yes, there comes the 5’o clock daily routine from my boss! Today was one of those days, when the work got over a little earlier, but then, being a “Now-in-US-but-basically-from-India” software engineer, how can one think of leaving before the boss.. So one hangs on , doing this and that, to make it 5, ney 5.15 to make sure that the boss’ car isn’t anywhere close by

So that’s 15 minutes to go, and what else but check my email, eventhough the last time I did was not more than 20 minutes before. Look, I told you, there is a new mail. Not too later did the excitement nosedive as the subject read “Have you sent your mothers day gift yet” ? Well, even the spam seems to be 3 days late as its already May 11!

I let my mind wander,
And what did it do?
It just kept right on going,
Until it got back to you.
I let my mind wander.
