Overview of UMD fencing club class

Fence for fun!!

Welcome to the world of fencing!

This is the outline of a fencing class taught in a total of 8 sessions, covering a variety of topics, and hopefully giving you an adequate basis in the sport of fencing. Now, this class should only be considered an introduction! There is a lifetimes worth of stuff to learn about this sport. On the other hand, there are surprisingly few things that one needs to know, and the richness of fencing comes from the combination and interaction of these basic concepts.

Club meeting times

Meeting place

HHP/North Gym, Gym 1

The class will be given on a weekly basis. Every Tuesday a new lesson will be presented, and then on Thursday the same material will be taught again. We decided to do it this way so that people who cannot make it everyday can still get every lesson. Also, this allows the people who teach the class a chance to rotate and get some fencing in themselves :-). Also, you are welcome to come to both days! The class is actually quite short, and the extra practice you would get would be very useful. There are also no organized lessons given on Sunday, but you can come and practice what you know, fence bouts (once that point in the lessons has been reached), and maybe even get a private lesson on a topic of interest!

The class will consist of about 30 minutes of warmup, 15 minutes of group footwork, and then the topic of the day.

Clothing

The club provides all the protective equipment that you will need. On the other hand, fencing requires a lot of movement, so you should come dressed with that in mind. Sneakers are pretty much a must. Low tops are preferred since they give more freedom of movement for your ankle. Also sweat pants are better then shorts, since they give a little more protection to your legs, but there are several members of the club who always wear shorts, so I guess they are ok too :-)
