Lesson 4: The Bout (rules, directing, judging)
This is the lesson you have all been waiting for! Actual bouting!
Today we will go over rules and officiating. We will concentrate
on "dry" fencing to get people into judging and directing.
Warmup
- Jumping jacks - just a few minutes to get arms and legs warm
- Neck rolls - note: don't roll back! It is bad for your neck.
- Arm circles - both ways, getting bigger
- Arms circles - big, arms going opposite ways (I like this one since I
can do it :-)
- Hip bends
- Partner stretches - get to know people in the club! :-)
- Ham strings - partner is behind you and assisting
- Right-left ham strings - partner is to the side and assisting
- Butterfly's - partner is in front of you and assisting, partner
also provides resistance
Footwork warmup
- 1 line drills
- Say footwork
- Follow the leader
- 2 line drills
- With switching sides in the middle
- With mask in hand (fun)
Lesson 4
- Rules
- Right of way
- 5 touches
- Off target stops action and you restart from where you were
- The strip
- 14 meters long
- Between 1.5 and 1.8 meters wide
- Start off 2 meters from the center
- Going off with one foot stops the action
- Going off with two feet stops the action and lose 1 meter
- Going off the end is a touch for your opponent
- Judging
- Watch whether the fencer on your side has hit their opponent
- 4 options- Yes, Yes but off-target, No, Abstain
- You get 1 vote
- You need to watch the action carefully!
- Directing
- Determines right of way
- Not as important to watch validity of touches
- Call all the reasonable actions
- Gets 1.5 votes
