Lesson 7: Counter Parries and Binds
Today we add more options to the attack and the defense. Until now all of
the parries have basically been direct, going from one line to another.
Now we learn parries that start in a line and then end in the same line
(namely the counter 6 and the counter 4). Also we add variety to the
attack with actions that aim to control the opponents blade (namely
the bind and the croise).
Warmup
- Jumping jacks - just a few minutes to get arms and legs warm
- Neck rolls - note: don't roll back! It is bad for your neck.
- Arm circles - both ways, getting bigger
- Arms circles - big, arms going opposite ways (I like this one since I
can do it :-)
- Hip bends
- Partner stretches - get to know people in the club! :-)
- Ham strings - partner is behind you and assisting
- Right-left ham strings - partner is to the side and assisting
- Butterfly's - partner is in front of you and assisting, partner
also provides resistance
Footwork warmup

- Contact of blade in attackers foible against the defenders forte
- Dangerous, in that the parry drags the opponents blade across
the defenders body

- Try to keep forte against foible for as long as possible
- Use bell guard to keep control of blade
- Croise
- Push opponents blade from high line to low line on same side
- Slide blade along opponents blade during attack
- Again, use bell guard to add control
