Eligibility
The Undergraduate Legal Aid Office is a free service only
available to current University of Maryland Undergraduate Students.
The office regularly checks student registration status by verifying the
student's University Identification Card. Please bring your
University ID to the office during your walk-in appointment.
Students will not be helped without their identification card.
The office is also limited to assisting
university students who do not have conflict with other undergraduate
students. This would create a conflict of interest for the office
staff, in that both parties would be entitled to use of the office's
services. To avoid this situation, you will be asked whether any
other parties in this situation are current undergraduate students.
If so, th e office will be unable to help you with your legal question
and will refer you to another service.
The Process - What to Expect?
When students seeking legal assistance enter the Undergraduate Legal Aid
Office they are greeted by a Student Legal Aid Intern. This intern
will take an intake report detailing for the staff attorney the relevant
facts of your case, and any questions that you wish to have answered by
the staff attorney. Anything said in the Student Legal Aid Office,
to either the student interns or office staff is treated with the
strictest confidence.
The intern will then have a short conference with
the attorney to relate the facts of the case and will then bring the
student-client into meet the attorney. Together, the student,
intern and attorney will meet to discuss questions and further actions.
Students in need of a follow up
appointment will be given the Student Intern's Office Hours and asked to
return during those hours with questions. |
