Cornell Unnamed Tournament

Ithaca, NY - Five brave freshmen and sophomores made the overnight trek to Ithaca, NY to participate in Cornell's annual fall tournament. Known in the past as the Big Red Royal Rumble, this year it went unnamed, for reasons unknown.

While this was certainly not Maryland's strongest team fielded in recent years, they did make a respectable showing. Sophomores Dan Goff, Eric Newman and Casey Retterer and Freshmen Michael Bentley and Robert Galecki make the 6-hour trek north from College Park, braving less than perfect weather and the occasional rabid truck driver to participate in this year's 9-team event.

The team is definitely inexperienced, but not a stranger to a challenge. Casey, Dan and Eric, along with Junior Noah Grosfeld-Katz, took 11th place in Division 2 at last year's NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament. Their showing on Saturday was not nearly as spectacular, they faced challenges from strong Michigan and Princeton teams, but still finished the day in 7th place overall.

The team traveled to Ithaca Friday night, staying in nearby Courtland, NY because there wasn't anywhere closer. After the drive up I-81, the team prepped by watching an inspirational Rocky 3. Early Saturday morning, after fixing Dan's semi-flat tire and grabbing a quick bite at McDonald's, they arrived at Cornell. Thanks to Scott Francis' brilliant directions, the team was advised to park in the garage next to the football stadium. This didn't do much good, considering Saturday was a home football date for the Ivy League school.

The fearless five opened the day with a 185-130 loss to Pittsburgh. They followed that with a drubbing at the hands of a strong Princeton team (335-60), and a close 255-190 loss ro Rochester. Round 4 saw a drubbing at the hands of eventual runner-up Michigan A, though a nice break before lunch pitted Maryland against the Cornell freshmen in Round 5, with Maryland getting their first win of the day in dominant fashion, 345-35.

Though after lunch is traditionally the team's down time, though the team got their second win of the day, facing Rochester B and winning 245-30. Losses to Princeton B (140-80) and Michigan B (315-80) finished up the round robin. The playoffs featured rematches against Rochester B (185-45), Cornell (60-150) and Princeton B (160-125). However, because the final standings were determined by playoff record only, Maryland 2-1 performance gave them second place in the bracket, and 7th place overall. Dan and Eric will next see action in the 18th annual Terrapin Invitational, to be held next weekend, October 23.
