1997-98 Season Statistics MAQT-run Tournament Statistics1997 Terrapin Invitational Tournament ResultsOn October 31-November 1, the University of Maryland, College Park held the Terrapin Invitational for the eleventh straight year. Thirteen teams from nine schools competed on hardcore ACF questions, in a full round robin. Schools included Chicago, Virginia, Cornell, South Carolina, Penn State, Roanoke, Georgia Tech, Kentucky (Seth Kendall playing by himself), and a Maryland House Team of one sophomore and freshmen. The University of Virginia A finished first with an undefeated 12-0 record. You Keep Your Chicago Away From Me and Cornell A tied with 10-2 marks, with the Chicago team taking second on the basis of head-to-head. Georgia Tech and South Carolina A were next at 8-4, with Georgia Tech finishing fourth by head-to-head. Congratulations to Andrew Yaphe and Phil O'Donoghue from Virginia A, with a special congrats to Brian Rostron, who took zeroth all-star honors by filling in for Andrew in Round 12 while he took the GREs, going 13-0. Congratulations also to Andrew, John Sheahan (YKY Chicago AFM), Eric Tentarelli (Cornell A), and Seth Kendall (Kentucky) for earning all-star awards. The winner of the Biscuit Award for most negs (34) went to our fifth scorer, TC Ford of South Carolina A. He won a dining hall biscuit (of appropriate hardness) and promptly took a bite. Finally, to conclude the tournament, competitors played on a special theme packet, written by a tandem led by John Nam. Those competitors who still don't know what the theme was will just have to be left in the dark, but let's just say it was most triumphant.
All ties were broken by head-to-head. YKY Chicago AFM lost to South Carolina A, Georgia Tech lost to Penn State, Virginia B lost to South Carolina B, and South Carolina B lost to MD House Team; every other game follows form.
MAQT Stats 1997-8These are the final stats for the 1997-8 season.
Swarthmore Junior BirdMaryland AThe A team won the tournament with one loss to Princeton.
Maryland BThe B team went 6-7, admirable considering that they were short one player.
Johns HopkinsMaryland OdysseyThe A team had a lot of close games, including two against the B team, but managed to emerge undefeated after beating Swarthmore in the finals.
Maryland Odyssey^2The B team lost in the semifinals in a close match against the A team, showing that the old-school Odyssey system kicks ass.
Maryland Atari 2600Md Atari finished in 8th place with a 3-7 record.
Maryland 8-Bit NESThe contacts must be a little dusty, because the NES team finished in 10th place with a 1-9 record. However, no one on the D team negged during the tournament, certainly a rare feat for MD teams.
Penn State NLITMD Approve dat Loan!Despite the question quality and the occasional factual error, MD entered the playoffs undefeated, and only suffered one loss to Cornell. We won the second game in the best two-out-of-three, but lost the third match on a classics-heavy packet including the now-infamous Appian Way question.
MD Go Gebco!Go Gebco finished in 10th place with a 5-6 record.
MD Jus' Fi' Dolluh!
Terrapin Invitational TournamentMD House TeamThe creatively-named house team, led by sophomore Shaun Hayeslip, finished with one win against USC B, and a very close game against Roanoke.
NAQT ACC TournamentMaryland ALocated at the noisy Gilman Hall at Johns Hopkins, the ACC tournament was pretty much what we expected. Maryland A won a 2 out of 3 final against Virginia, playing on rather trashy questions.
Josh Allen played for 5 games on Friday night. Willie played the other fourteen rounds on Saturday. Maryland BThe B team finished in fourth place with a 12-5 record.
Maryland CWith a 3-14 record, the C team finished in 15th place.
Maryland "Novice" teamFor some dumb reason, the freshman teams were mixed on Saturday morning. In the double round-robin, the freshmen finished in fourth place with a 3-7 record.
PrincetonMaryland AThe A team made a valiant effort, but lost a close game to Swarthmore in the finals.
Maryland BThe second team finished with a 7-4 record, and lost in the quarterfinals to Cornell.
Penn Bowl 007Maryland AMaryland A finished as the top of their bracket, and lost to Harvard B in the semifinals on a protest. Bad moderators, poor questions -- all in all, a typical Penn Bowl. One highlight is a feat that has probably never been achieved before. In a game against South Carolina B, our opponents were not there, so we were playing against empty chairs. Despite this fact, Dave Goodman managed to neg on the first question, thus making us the first team to ever be losing to nonexistent opponents. Not yet fully satisfied, both Daves and Willie combined for 4 more negs, thus negging on 1/4 of the questions in the round.
Maryland BThe B team got off to a good start, losing only a close one to GW on the first night. After the first game Saturday, they were 6-1 and tied for first place. However, the Penn Bowl question gods caught up with them, and they lost five games down the stretch, including three on the last toss-up, to finish at 9-6, eighth in the Grey Bracket.
Maryland CLike a grandfather clock, John Nam keeps on ticking, leading the C team to 4th place in the Pleasance Bracket and a playoff spot. Unfortunately, John wound down in their match against eventual runner-up Michigan A.
GWU JVC IVMaryland 1The 1 team finished in 7th place with a 7-5 record.
Maryland 2The 2 team lost to the 3 team in the finals, so they finished in second place.
Maryland 3The 3 team went undefeated, and won the usual vaportrophy.
NAQT RegionalsMaryland AThe A team went undefeated, and only won two games by fewer than 200 points. An impressive 4.5 power tossups per game was topped only by a more impressive 3.1 negs per game. Dave G. is Bo, Dave H. is Luke, Julie is Daisy, and Willie is Cooter.
Maryland BDespite two biscuit losses to UMBC A and VA Tech A, the B team finished in second place after going 3-2 in the playoffs. John is Boss Hogg, Adam is Cletus, John Allen is Roscoe, and Shaun is Enos.
Maryland CMaryland C finished in 7th place by going 4-1 in the playoffs. Highlights include a pummeling of John Edwards, and beating Penn State twice. Bill is Uncle Jesse, Josh Bates is the General Lee, Michelle is Lulu, and Khon is Flash.
ACF RegionalsMaryland AMaryland A lost only one game, to Maryland B, proving that the Curse still exists.
Maryland BThe B team had a biscuit tournament, losing many games that they shouldn't have, but managed to beat the A team. They finished in 7th place with a 4-10 record.
Bill only played in six games. Maryland CThe C team finished with no wins, but put up a very close game against the B team. They lost on the overtime question, which ended their possibility for a transitive victory over MD A.
DSHIT IIMaryland AMaryland A finished 7th, with a 6-7 record.
Maryland BMaryland B had a 6-7 record, but finished 9th because of total points.
Maryland CMaryland C finished in 12 place with a 1-12 record. Annie and Lloyd only played 6 games.
UVA WahooMarylandWith some effort, Maryland again managed to lose Wahoo, placing third this time. More depressing was the 19-0 game against Longwood. We would have had our first 20-0 game if anyone had gotten the last question, on Helmholtz.
In addition, Khon went 4-0 (2.7) on Legion of Dumb, and John went 71-27 (38.3) on Team Edwards!
Swarthmore QOTC VIIMaryland AMaryland A finished undefeated (12-0), with their closest game coming against the B team in the finals.
Maryland BMaryland B finished second with a 9-3 record.
NAQT NationalsMaryland A
TrashionalsSick, Sad WorldSick, Sad World was undefeated before beginning a most impressive slide into mediocrity by losing its last four games. The players' names are headlines from Sick, Sad World. Dave Goodman is the Renegade Surgeon, Dave Hamilton is the Neonatal Skinhead, Michelle is the G-string Granny, and Mark is Lax-O-Shake (actually, this one is from a commercial before an episode of SSW).
3 Jews and a KnishWith a 9-5 record, they finished in 11th place.
Lawndale Fashion ClubThe Fashion Club went 5-3 in the round robin, and 2-4 in the playoffs (much like Sick, Sad World, they also lost their last 4 games for a depressing end to the tournament. Yay team!).
ACF NationalsMaryland AAfter winning their first fourteen games, the A team lost a close game to Virginia, and, like a drunken and ornery Andy Wang shattering a liquor store window with a baseball bat, we got absolutely smashed by Harvard, leaving us in third place. Harvard exhumed Jeff Johnson just for the occasion.
Maryland BWith an 8-7 record, the B team finished in 9th place.
Maryland CDespite not having teammates for much of the tournament, Josh perservered as Maryland C. The team won two games, and finished in 19th place.
