1999-2000 Season Statistics MAQT-run Tournament Statistics1999 Maryland Masters ResultsFirst, thanks to Bryce Avery, James Dinan, Kristin Hamlin, and Michelle Cantave for reading at various points during the weekend.Almost everyone seemed to enjoy the questions. Some rooms were pretty hot, and the Masters tournament lasted until fairly late, but we don't play no pansy-ass quizbowl here at UMCP. so anyway, here's the results:

The questions can be purchased through their respective writers: Andrew Yaphe, and Eric Hilleman/Subash. Thanks again to everyone who attended! Luckily Arthur showed up Sunday to lead them to a winning record in the prelims and a 2-1 playoff showing.
Center of the Known Universe 2The 10 hour drive to Chattanooga featured some repeats of the number 2 -- 2 stops in the same town overnight (Lenoir, TN), 2 meals at the same Cracker Barrel (Harrisonburg, VA), and 2 hours spent on a meal at Applebee's (Hamilton, TN). The most important number, however, was zero -- the number of losses we had. Yes, we ran the table, and didn't even need a playoff (or so Charlie thought) to be declared Division 1 champs. The tournament featured crushing defeats of Georgia Tech and Kentucky, with closer matches against South Carolina and Tennessee Tech (???). Dave went nuts, losing the individual scoring award to only Gourab from Duke (who had no teammates). This tournament proved the South-East is weak, and apparently featured the debut and shut-down of the Denison team.
SNEWT IIIReport on this freshmen/sophomore tournament coming soon!
Georgetown Cup VWe sent four teams to this tournament, which turned out to be a veritable Maryland reunion, with two other teams (Cornell and Hopkins) led by Maryland veterans (Matt Colvin and Adam Fine), plus Zeke Berdichevsky playing as Michigan.Maryland ALed by Shaun Hayeslip, this team lost only to the C team in the prelims, then beat the B team in the playoffs to put themselves in prime position to win the tournament. Unfortunately, last-tossup losses to Hopkins and Cornell dropped them to fifth.
Maryland BDave Hamilton with two second-year players? You'd think Dave might be the only one scoring. Not by a long shot! Despite Dave's impressive scoring rampage, Alvin and Chad more than held their own. The team's only loss came to the A team, and they won the tournament with their 11-1 record. Stats to come...Maryland CThis powerful team went undefeated in its bracket, but went 0-3 in the playoff bracket to finish at 9-3 and fourth in the tournament (thanks to its win over the A team). Lowlights include a pimp-slapping from Adam Fine and a biscuit loss to Cornell and Matt Colvin, thanks to an unfortunate bit of honesty from John.
Maryland DThis team featured our youngsters in their first month of competition, with year-veteran Patrick to help out. They only had one win (Delaware) in prelims, but doubled that mark with a win over Denison in the playoffs. We think there are good things to come from these guys! Stats to come...TRASH Regionals at GWThis tournament featured the two worst readers ever witnessed by those in attendance. That's not hyperbole. We sent two teams, and one went 9-1 in prelim play to nab a #1 seed in the playoffs, in which we went 0-3. Too bad Arthur had to leave at lunch. Oh well, we still got our bid for TRASHionals.Limp Biscuits
NAQT Sectionals at YaleWell, we had some folks who wanted to go to NAQT, and we couldn't go to the Mid-Atlantic sectional at Virginia Tech, because they changed theirs to the next weekend, unfortunately the same weekend as our high school tournament. After much player-shuffling, the team was decided on, and this one went. They finished at 4-8.
Michigan MLKWe finished 11-3 here, good for fourth place, despite being shorthanded to an illness to our fourth. Telling fact: we beat Penn State handily, but they went on to second place thanks to our close losses to Chicago, Illinois, and Kentucky. More fun was the basketball the night before the tournament, the bar afterwards, and the casino in Windsor (as well as our adventure in Canada).
Penn Bowl 9Someone foolishly thought that nothing could top last year's "Dueling Samers." Well, I was wrong, as three of the top teams in the country went 14-0 through preliminary play and lost in the first round of playoffs. As some Maryland player yelled after hearing CWRU had defeated Michigan to prove Dave Goodman right when he said that Illinois, Michigan, and Maryland would never play eachother, "Penn Bowl Rules!" What will they think of next year?Maryland AThis team featured a feuding set of teammates, and inflated hopes of a national win. After cruising through round robin play undefeated, we promptly lost to Michigan B on a rather suspect packet. Mmmmm... sour grapes.
JCV 6 at GWHome of the original "vapor trophy," this year's Juan Carlos Viscera Memorial Tournament featured no playoff rounds. One TeamThis team finished in third place with a 7-3 record.
NAQT Regionals at VirginiaStrange doings in MAQT politics led to an Undergraduate team sent as "A" and a "B" team that finished 12-1. Also sent to this tournament was a Division 2 team. Penn State apparently went undefeated to win.Maryland AThanks to an inspirational Diamondback, this all-Undergraduate team smacked Duke around, but lost many other games to finish at a disappointing 7-6. At least we got to say to Duke, "Du Bist Mein Punk Bitch, ja!"
Maryland BThis team, which raised some eyebrows at the tournament for being named "B," finished 12-1, and will get us our bid to Nationals.
Maryland CThis Division 2 team's day started out promising, being 2-2 at lunch. Unfortunately they experienced brain freeze and finished at 3-9. The brain freeze continued afterwards as Andy locked his keys in his still-running car.
