What's it about?

Many of you remember our event last year featuring the movie Crash. This year's event features the movie Higher Learning, which touches upon many of the issues faced between cultural groups on campus. Its tag line, "49 Countries. 6 Races. 2 Sexes. 1 Campus" can just as easily be applied to UMCP. We welcome all students to join us in watching this movie and continuing our dialogue concerning these issues. Free dinner will be served during the movie. We ask that everyone bring at least one canned good as admission, all of which will be donated to local organizations. We hope to see you there!

11-28-06
Event Name:

Black Indians: Slavery Is Not Our Only Heritage

Where? Nyumburu Multipurpose Room
When? 5pm - 7pm
What's it about?

Presented by The American Indian Student Union (AISU), Community Roots, the Multiracial/Biracial Student Association and Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy (MICA)

The stories of Native Americans and African-Americans are parallel tracks of tragedy. From the colonial era, the intermingling of these people combined two diverse worlds into a new mixed race of people who have courageously withstood attempts to erase their twin cultural heritage.

JOIN US as we explore the issue of racial identity between Native and African Americans. This in-depth documentary examines the coalescence of these two groups in American history. Discounted, and often ignored by mainstream America, these minority peoples have often shared a common past. However, with their heritage ignored and their contributions denied they are invisible at the dawn of the new millennium.
