Name and Purpose
Section 1 The name of this organization shall be The University of Maryland College Park Pre-Medical Society.
Section 2: The purpose of the Pre-Medical Society of the University of Maryland is to provide pre-medical students with a forum for actively sharing general concerns, problems, and common interests relating to the medical profession. Among the ideals to be fostered by the Pre-Medical Society of the University of Maryland are scholarship, compassion, dedication, service to others, and all the attributes desirable for the career as a medical doctor.
Article II:
Membership
Section 1: The membership of this society shall be open to all undergraduate students attending The University of Maryland who express interest in the field of medicine or related areas of study.
Section 2: We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, or sexual orientation.
Article III:
Finance
Section 1: Expenditures must be approved by the entire executive board.
Section 2: Additional means of generating revenue may be implemented by the Society.
Article IV:
Meetings
Section 1: A regular meeting shall be held bi-weekly during the academic year, as designated by the President or the executive board.
Section 2: There shall be an Executive Board meeting bi-weekly, or as deemed necessary by the President, and should be attended by the entire board including committee chairpersons. The purpose of these meetings is to clear and arrange all administrative duties and responsibilities prior to the following meeting.
Article V:
Officers & Executive Board
Section 1: The Executive Board shall consist of the two Co-Presidents, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, two Community Service chairs, Public Relations, and IT Director. All Executive Officers must be undergraduates.
Section 2: Members of the Executive Board have the following powers:
Subsection 1: To appoint chairpersons and select committees.
Subsection 2: To establish those select committees which may be necessary to promote the activities of the society.
Subsection 3: To nominate members for chairpersons of standing committees.
Section 3: Specific duties of the Officers:
Subsection 1: President
A. The President shall serve as chairperson of the Executive Board.
B. The President shall act as the liaison between the Pre-Medical Society and other groups including: The Law
and Health Professions Advising Office, the Office of Campus Programs, and other student organizations.
C. The President shall coordinate all meetings and events of the Society, and make sure that these events
are carried out in the best interest of the Society.
Subsection 2: Vice-President
A. The Vice-President shall chair the meetings in the absence of the President.
B. Attain speakers for meetings.
C. Organize trips and blood drives.
Subsection 3:Secretary
A.To keep a running list of all members for utilization.
B. To collect and sort incoming emails.
C. Facilitate meetings, and participate in any other action as designated by the President.
D. Compile minutes to be sent out regarding each meeting.
Subsection 4: Treasurer
A. The Treasurer shall be responsible for financial affairs and transactions of the Society. A complete financial report shall be prepared by
the treasurer each semester and presented to all members.
B. The Treasurer is responsible for attending all relevant SGA Meetings, as well as requesting funding for Pre-Medical Society events.
Subsection 5: Community Service
A. To organize community service events and handle outside community service.
B. To attend and be present at every community service event
C. To keep track of membership hours
Subsection 5: Public Relations
A. To send out information through emails to members
B. To provide listserv messages
C. To assist secretary with sorting and responding to emails
Subsection 5: IT Director
A. To maintain and update the website with officer information
B. To post meeting schedule online
Section 4: The Executive Board shall be responsible for establishing policy of the society, the guidance of the society, and shall have any and all powers necessary to fulfill these requirements.
Section 5: Meetings of the Executive Board will at all times be predetermined by the President. Any member of the Executive Board may call upon the President to convene a special meeting of the Executive Board.
Article VI:
Election Procedures
Section 1: Nine elected officers comprising the Executive Board shall be the two Co-Presidents, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, two Community Service, Public Relations, and IT Director.
Section 2: The election of officers shall be at the final meeting of fall semester. People intending to run for position should notify the Board a week prior to elections.
Section 3: The right to hold office or to vote in the election or to make any decisions in the society shall solely be the right of undergraduates who are active members in the Pre-Medical Society of the University of Maryland. All voting members must be undergraduates.
Section 4: The officers elect will take over at the end of the fall semester.
Section 5: Candidates must be at least sophomores to be considered for Presidency.
Article VII:
Terms of Office
Section 1: Elected officer terms will last one year and shall commence as indicated in Article VI, Section 4.
Section 2: Shall the President for any reason vacate his/her office; it shall be resumed by the Vice-President. Should this event occur, the new President need not be of junior standing. Special election should be held to fill the Vice-President's position.
Section 3: Any dismissals shall be handled by the President in accordance with established processes of the University.
Article VIII:
Committees
Section 1: The members of the committees shall be chosen from the active membership.
Section 2: The committees of the Society and the appointment of the chairpersons are outlined in the by-laws of this constitution.
Article IX:
Conduct
Section 1: Any member may be expelled from the Pre-Medical Society for performing any act which violates University or Federal laws and regulations.
Article X:
Subcommittees
Section 1: The Standing committees will be composed the following way:
A. Advertising Committee- Shall be responsible for posting fliers on campus to advertise general meetings and otherevents.
B. Volunteer Committee- Shall be responsible for organizing events, in particular community service.
C. Social Committee- Shall be responsible for recruiting members, and providing food for each meeting, or as specified by the President.
D. IT Director or Webmaster- Shall be responsible for updating and maintaining webpage, along with any other action
specified by the President.
Section 2: Composition of each committee and addition of new committees shall be left to the decision of the Executive Board, and should be ratified by collective decision of the Pre-Medical Society Board.
Section 3: The advisor for the Society shall be the Pre-Medical Advisor as specified by the University of Maryland, College Park.
