Darfur Crisis
Darfur is a region in western Sudan, a country located in northeastern Africa bordering Egypt and Ethiopia. In February of 2003, a conflict began between Baggara tribes and non-Baggara people. The Baggara hired the Janjaweed, a militia, to “cleanse” the region of what they deem to be disloyal to the Sudanese government. The result is what many are calling “ethnic cleansing” or genocide. Hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians have been displaced, raped, murdered and robbed indiscriminately. An estimated 3.5 million are starving, 2.4 million displaced, and 400,000 are dead.
Many of us know so little to about it because it is barely being televised or reported by any media, therefore keeping many of us ignorant of it. Our goal is to not only raise funds to help the situation in Sudan, but to raise awareness. Knowledge is indeed power, and we as human beings have the power and responsibility to end this conflict.
