RYLA Basic Facts

Rotaract Members: Duties And Responsibilities

Rotaract members are crucial to the success of RYLA. Your job is multifaceted. Thank you for your support!

  1. It is important to note that each Rotaract Group Leader is volunteering his/her time help make RYLA a successful conference. Thank you for volunteering your time and talents.
  2. Two Rotaract members will be assigned to each group of students. Each group will consist of no more than 8 students. The 2 Rotaract members will work together to lead their group throughout the RYLA conference.
  3. As group Leader, you will be responsible for the following:

-Make sure that all of your members are in the correct group (group assignments will be made by Rotary staff, and group members are not allowed to switch groups). We will provide you with a list of your group members. It is important that all group members stay together in their group throughout the weekend. Learning to work together in a group is a very important part of the RYLA experience.

-Each Group Leader will stay with their group throughout the weekend (for meals, all presentations, work sessions, and all activities). Your presence with your group will help to develop Group cohesiveness. This is important to the success of your Group, because a Group that works well together is often a group that ranks high at the end of the conference.

- During presentations and other activities, it is important that the Group Leaders help to maintain order within their group and assure that their students respectfully pay attention to the speakers or activity directors.

- Each group will be working on designing a Community Service Project throughout the weekend. It is your job to supervise your group and facilitate the development of this project.

- Throughout the weekend there are many deadlines that each group will be required to meet, such as: Group Quizzes; Program Evaluations; Group Point System; Group Mascot; Group Cheer/Song/Skit; Group Flag; Community Service Project Outline; Talent Show; etc. It will be your job to help your Group meet these deadlines. Regarding the Group Mascot &Talent Show presentations:

We ask that you help your Group with the planning of thesepresentations, and stress to your group members that all presentations must be appropriate and not offensive (please remember that the people who are present at RYLA are from various backgrounds and age groups).  Remind them that their presentations should not include inappropriate language, and should be something they would be willing to present to their parents or Grandparents.

Rotaract/YMCA Group Leaders: Duties & Responsibilities

  1. A Group Point System has been designed to encourage active participation of group members in each aspect of the conference. This point system will determine the rankings of the Groups at the completion of the Conference. The highest ranking Groups will receive awards at the final Awards Luncheon. This point system is very important! It is important that each Group Leader remembers that they are the adult in charge of their group! Please remember the 4 Way Test when assigning points to your group.
  2. At night, you will not be sleeping with your Group (since we have mixed sex Groups, and sleeping arrangements are same sex). You will share a center room (in a cabin) with one or more same sex Rotaractors, and there will be same sex students in 2 rooms on each side of yours. It will be your responsibility to chaperone the students in your cabin. There is a Code of Conduct in your RYLA Manual. Each student and their parent/guardian have signed this Code of Conduct. Included in this Code of Conduct is a “lights out” time. It will be your responsibility to enforce this in your sleeping cabin.
  3. If there are any conflicts, problems, or illnesses within your Group or sleeping cabin (including any problems with heat or plumbing, etc.), or if you have any questions throughout the weekend, please do the following: go to Navin Manchery-Valliappan (he is the Rotaract Leader for RYLA); if Navin is unable to handle the situation or if he needs additional assistance, he will come to Judy Cappuccilli- RYLA Chairperson or Bill Ceglia- RYLA Committee member. It is important to us that everyone (students, Rotaract members, YMCA Staff, and Rotarians) have a positive & safe experience, learn a lot, and have FUN!!!!! This will definitely be an experience of a life time for all!

Special Note: It is important that you stay at Camp Letts for the entire RYLA conference; and if you have an automobile we request that you do not drive it (on or off Camp Letts grounds) during the conference. We also request that you remember that you are the Group Leader (not a group member); and since you are the adult leader of your group, you will lead your group to complete all assignments, meet all deadlines, and follow the Code of Conduct.

Thanks For Volunteering To Make RYLA 2008 A Big Success!!!!!
