Parking at Branchview/Ballew Avenue, Berwyn Heights, MD
301-927-2163, TTY 301-699-2544
"Highlighted by a 38-acre lake, this park boasts an aquatic garden, good fishing, a handicapped accessible fishing pier, and more than two miles of hiker-biker trails which connect it to the Calvert Road Park and the grounds of the College Park Airport and Aviation Museum. No vehicles are permitted on park grounds. Visitors should enter the park via trails at the 5200 block of Calvert Road in College Park, or Osage Street and Swathmore Court in Berwyn Heights."
Directions | We will try to arrange for carpooling. Please let us know if you need (or can give) a ride.
Getting to Lake Artemesia is a trick, even though it is in the exact center of College Park. There may be a slightly shorter way of getting there, but this route definitely works and is easy to follow:
Take University Blvd. east from campus (toward I-495 & I-295), past Baltimore Ave. (Rt 1).
Turn left onto 58th Street after crossing Rhode Island Avenue. There is an oddly placed sign for Lake Artemesia on the right at this intersection. [If you get to Greenbelt Plaza, you've gone too far.]
58th will curve around to the left and pass back under University Blvd (193), heading due South. 58th changes its name to Branchville Road, Ballew Ave. and 55th Ave, but continues on straight South to the lake.
After about a mile, there will be a marked parking area on the left. This is as close as you can legally park your car. [If you arrive at a gate blocking the road, you've gone too far - the parking is about 300 feet back.]
Take the paved walking path to the right once you reach the lake. We will be meeting in the first gazebo, which is about 200 feet from the gate.
What to Bring? It's potluck!
SAM will provide drinks, chips and plates/cups/utensils for everyone. RSVP to Jill, jfreilly@wam.umd.edu, (or call 301.477.2462) to let us know what you're bringing.
