  • Tour of the New National Public Broadcasting Archives

  • "Possession" and Tea Party

    We'll be watching Gwynneth Paltrow in "Posession," a film about literary scholars in England on the manuscript trail left by two Victorian poets. Please RSVP (jfreilly@wam.umd.edu) to the tea party and let us know if you'll be bringing cookies, cake, or tea sandwiches. We'll provide the tea.

    Join us for the annual SAM Bakesale and Booksale. This popular event requires lots of help from our members, both for staffing the table throughout the day and for providing free baked goodies. Contact Sarah to offer your services.

  • Tour of Archives Center at National Museum of American History
    Fri April 11 | 3:30 pm | NMAH
    Join us for a tour of the Archives Center with chief archivist, John Fleckner. If you'd like to METRO in with us, we'll be meeting at 2:45 in front of Hornbake Library (mall side); or you can simply meet us at the mall entrance of NMAH at 3:30. After the tour, we'll be heading over to Capital City Brewing Company for happy hour. Space is limited. Contact Jill with any questions or to sign up.

    Have a brown-bag lunch with fellow HiLS students. This is especially to help answer questions of new HiLS students, but sharing information and experience will benefit all current HiLS, too. Contact Jill with questions.
  • Hornbake Showcase Events

    The UM Libraries are sponsoring a year-long series of events to highlight Hornbake Library's Special Collections (Archives & Manuscripts, Marylandia & Rare Books, and National Public Broadcasting Archives & Library of American Broadcasting). Attending these presentations is a great way to learn more about their exciting collections. It is also a perfect chance to check out some public programming done by archives and special collections.

    Fall events include the opening of the H. C. Byrd exhibit (9/13), a lecture by Comp Sci professor Ben Shneiderman (10/3), and "Conserving Testudo" (11/7).

  • Trip to the Renaissance Festival in Annapolis, MD

  • Archives Day Fair at Smithsonian Institution
    National Archives Week!
    Thurs, Oct 10 | 12 pm - 5 pm | Smithsonian's Ripley Center
    The DC Chapter of MARAC is hosting their annual archives fair to celebrate Archives Day. Learn about DC, MD, and VA repositories and meet area archivists. A great way to find out about potential internships. We'll be getting a group together to metro into DC. Contact Jill if you'd like to come along.

    National Archives Week!

    Curator of Literary Manuscripts for UM Libraries, Beth Alvarez, will discuss with us the challenges and rewards unique to working with literary manuscripts, including the microfilming projects she has overseen. Our lunch will conclude with a tour of the Katherine Anne Porter room in the Hornbake Library. Contact Sarah to reserve a spot.
  • Tour of the Riversdale Mansion
    National Archives Week!

    We'll be having a special tour of the Riversdale Mansion, which belonged to the Calvert family. Our tour will be with the historian, who will shed light on how archival resources aid in the interpretation of this historic home. (C.B. Calvert founded the Maryland Agricultural College, the forerunner of UM.) Contact Jill to reserve a spot!

  • Richard Cox: Student Discussion and Guest Lecture
    Thurs, Nov 14 | Student Mtg: 2-4 pm HBK 4115
    Guest Lecture "Flowers after the Funeral: The Role of Libraries, Archives, and Museums after 9-11," at 4:30 pm in McKeldin special events room (6th floor), informal reception afterwards.
    Students have the chance to meet with this leading archivist and writer. Later, attend the lecture and reception, which is co-sponsored by CLIS, SAM, MARAC-DC, MARAC-Md, and the UM Libraries. Contact Jill with any questions.
