- Panel Discussion on the Nomination of the New Chief Archivist
of the United States

Listen to a panel of speakers discuss the recent nomination of Dr.
Allen Weinstein to the position of Chief Archivist of the United States.
There has been some questions about the nomination process, and panelists will
discuss how the process has been conducted in the past, and what
changes might be
made in the future (e.g., will SAA and other professional organizations be
consulted about future nominees?).
Panelists will be Frank Burke (former Deputy Chief Archivist, former
SAA President),
Tom Connors (Curator, NPR Archives), and Lee Strickland (Director,
Center for Information
Policy). The moderator will be Dr. Susan Davis.
There will be a reception from 4:30 to 5:00. Please RSVP to Paula Larich if you can attend the event.
- The Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for the Humanities Session on
the DC Archives

a FREE event. We'll meet for lunch at 12:30 (at the

- National Museum of Health and Medicine Archives,
Walter Reed Army Medical Center

Come take a tour of the archives of the National Museum of Health
and Medicine.
The archives house one of the most comprehensive collections on Civil
War medicine,
including photographs, speciments (in the Museum), and medical
records, all of which
were used for research purposes to better understand wounds,
infections, healing processes,
etc.
Please RSVP to Paula Larich no later than Weds., April 14. Parking is restricted, so
we'll be carpooling. Please let us know if you would like to drive.

Wendy Shea, audiovisual archivist at the Archives Center, will give a
lecture on
AV media, their care, and preservation issues. This is a good opportunity to
learn about nonprint media and how to recognize and take care of
various types of
deterioration.

- Archives/Special Library Tour of the National Geographic Society

SAM, SLA at Maryland, and library students from Catholic
University will take a joint
archives/special library tour of National Geographic, headed by Karen
Huffman, a CLIS
alum. We will be greeted by Susan Fifer-Canby, DC-SLA President, and
then shown the resources
available to NGS researchers and the general public.

Farragut North, on the red line. Plan to meet at 9:45 in the lobby
on 17th street, as we need to sign in.

- DC-Maryland MARAC Caucus Meeting/Jim Henson Exhibit

Thursday, December 4 | 4-5 pm | Maryland Room Gallery, Ground Floor,
Hornbake Library
Attend the joint DC-Maryland MARAC caucus meeting to get a brief
intro to and overview of the Jim Henson Designs & Doodles exhibit (that has been in the Maryland Room Gallery for a
few months) and screen the accompanying video. Then browse the
exhibit. This is a great opportunity to meet MARAC members and check
out the great exhibit.
After the exhibit, people will head down to Lupo's on Route 1 for some
pre-holiday merriment.
- Tour of National Agricultural Library (NAL)

There will be a tour of the NAL that will focus on procedures for
doing research in special collections, policies regarding use of
materials, collection concentrations, current exhibits, and student
internship and employment opportunities!
Please plan to be prompt. The tour is scheduled for 9:30AM. Please
allow time to park in the free visitor's parking, and sign in at the
security desk.
There will be a group leaving from in front of Hornbake Library about

- Tour of Gordon Prange Collection

In the process of being rescheduled | McKeldin Library
Join us for a tour of the Prange Collection in McKeldin Library.
This collection is the most comprehensive collection in existence of
publications issued in Japan during the immediate post-World War II
years of American occupation. For more information on the

- Maryland Renaissance Festival

SAM is getting together a group to celebrate the last weekend of
the Ren Fest. We will be meeting on the steps in front of Hornbake
library (library side) and 10 am Saturday morning and leave as a
group. Tickets cost $16.

- MARAC DC Archives Caucus Fair

Wednesday, October 15 | 12-5 pm | Dillon Ripley Center, Smithsonian
Meet fellow archivists and members of MARAC at an archives fair
featuring local DC area archives and related libraries. From
2:30-3:30, there is a lecture on preserving the archives of
Baghdad.
We will be meeting at the College Park metro station at 1:15pm to go
down to the Smithsonian. Contact Elizabeth with questions or if you

- Annual Summer BBQ/Picnic

Sunday, August 3 | 2pm | Paint Branch Parkway Park
Come join current, future, and past SAM members for a summer
picnic in the park! The picnic is potluck. SAM will provide drinks,
chips and plates/cups/utensils for everyone. The park has open
grassy areas, so bring outdoor fun stuff if you want (ie. football,
frisbee, etc.)

from the Beltway:
At the large intersection of Route 1 and Campus Drive, turn left onto
Paint Branch Parkway. You will pass the College Park Metro station
on your right, the airpark on your left. The parking lot and park
will be on your left, across the street from the pool/ice rink.
