The Ins and Outs of Archivist Certification

The Student Archivists at Maryland (SAM) and The National Archives Assembly Career Development Committee, present a talk by Thomas Brown. The presentation will focus on:
(1) Why to become a certified archivist.
(2) How to become a certified archivist.
(3) De-mystifying the archivist certification exam.
A special reception for Dr. Susan Davis will precede the event at 4:15. The reception will continue after the presentation as another opportunity to ask more questions and mingle with the presenter and other attendees. Join Journalism instructor, Ira Chinoy, and students that took his course, as they present their projects and discus their experiences. Ira's class, JOUR774, "Mining the National Archives," is an exciting elective open to CLIS students. It offers students the opportunity to meet archivists at NARA, learn about archives from the researchers' point of view, and conduct a research project at Archives II. Please join the Student Archivists at Maryland for an informal talk by Dr. Gregory Hunter, the Principal Archivist and Records Manager on the Electronic Records Archives (ERA) project at the National Archives.
Dr. Hunter is a Certified Records Manager, Certified Archivist, Fellow of the Society of American Archivists, and Professor in the Palmer School of Library and Information Science at Long Island University. More biographical information on Dr. Hunter may be found at www.hunterinformation.com.
Dr. Hunter’s talk will focus on the details of the National Archive’s contract with Lockheed Martin to build the ERA and its impact on archivists trying to deal with electronic records. His expertise and knowledge of all things archival will make for an interesting presentation and discussion.

Come join the Student Archivists at Maryland at our second annual Americana event, celebrating American archival culture on October 27th from 7 - 9:30pm in the Prince George's Room of Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland.
Our theme this year is film preservation and features multi-media presentations from speakers from the National Archives and Records Administration, the National Museum of American History, the University of Maryland Libraries, and more!
Live music and light refreshments will be provided. Tickets available at the Hoff Box Office, on the second floor
of Hornbake Library (classroom side), at the door or contact us via email for ticket reservations. Tickets are $6 in advance and $8 at the door.

Come join SAM as we welcome everyone back to the Fall semester and bid summer farewell…
Anyone with an interest in archives and their families or significant others are invited. SAM will provide paper products, hamburgers, and hotdogs. Please bring drinks, chips, salad, or dessert to share with everyone. There is also a field, so bring Frisbees or kites.
PLEASE RSVP by August 25 to Heather so we can plan on enough food. Also, please let her know if you need a ride or if you are willing to give a ride to others.

Off I-95, take Exit 23 (Route 201) Kenilworth Avenue South to (Route 193) Greenbelt Road East. The park is a quarter mile on the right. The park address is 6565 Greenbelt Road (Route 193). From Washington, D.C., take (Route 295) Baltimore-Washington Parkway north to (Route 193) Greenbelt Road West. Proceed to the 2nd traffic light. The park is on the left across from Fridays restaurant and the Marriot Courtyard.
From UM campus, take Route 193 (Greenbelt Road East). Park will be on the right.
To get to the Sweetgum Picnic Area, go to the stop sign and turn right. The picnic area is on the left.
