On March 29, 2000, approximately thirty current archives students and alumni gathered for pizza and discussion in the fourth floor CLIS lounge. Pizza eating began at 6:30 and at 7:00 four alumni spoke about their experiences in the archives and records management fields, giving advice and suggestions to students about topics to study and classes to take.
Suzanne Adamko, audio-visual archivist at the Library of American Broadcasting/National Public Broadcasting Archives; Matt Brown, electronic records appraisal archivist at the Maryland State Archives; Paul Lagasse, deputy director for information resources management for History Associates, Inc.; and Lydia Reid, assistant project manager of ARC for NARA encouraged students to take as many technology courses and internships as possible. Ms. Adamko spoke about her archival job in Budapest, Hungary as a post-graduate fellow, alerting students to the possibility of international opportunities. In terms of procuring employment, alumni encouraged graduates to apply for a position even if one's skills did not meet the criteria exactly; often job descriptions and salaries are flexible.
Overall, the event was a great success, and SAM looks forward to planning a similar event next year.
On March 1, 2000 at noon in the work area of the University Archives, Jennifer Evans, HiLS student and University Archives graduate assistant, gave an informal talk about the process of creating and mounting an exhibit for a library or archival institution, including techniques for displaying items, many examples from previous exhibits, and issues and concerns involved in the exhibit process. Four students; Anne Turkos, University Archivist; Beth Alvarez, Curator of Literary Manuscripts; and Jennifer were present.
Fall 1999
On November 30, 1999, SAM held its annual book and bake sale. Thanks to many customers, the event was a success. This year there were two locations for the sale: in the CLIS lounge on the fourth floor and outside of Wasserman library on the second floor. Warm pretzels and apple cider were welcome additions to the traditional baked goods: muffins, cupcakes, sweet breads, and cookies.
Despite troubles with parking at the College Park metro station, eight members of SAM enjoyed a very informative and entertaining tour of the Preservation and Conservation Department of the Library of Congress on November 18, 1999. The tour included introductions to all the divisions of the department. We saw books being prepared for an exhbition on the titles of Thomas Jefferson's library, witnessed the "box-making" machine in action, and discussed some of the issues concerning digitization and microfilming. We also saw the unit which is responsible for maintaing the general collection--no small task!
The annual SAM book and bake sale is November 30, 1999 from 9:00 until the goods run out. There will be three locations this year:outside of Wasserman Library, in the CLIS lounge, and on the first floor of Hornbake. Donations of baked goods and volunteers to work the tables are needed. Contact Emma Wilmer (ekwilmer@wam.umd.edu) for more information.
Join SAM on Thursday, November 18, 1999, for a tour of the Conservation and Preservation Department of the Library of Congress from 2:00-4:00. The tour promises to be very informative and enjoyable. Contact Jennifer Evans (jne@wam.umd.edu) for more information about meeting times and places.
SAM held its second roundtable on Tuesday, November 9, 1999. With Anne Turkos, University of Maryland University Archivist, leading the discussion, students and Mr. Halonen explored the relationship between archives, libraries, and museums. Ms. Turkos brought along a few "show and tell" items from the University Archives to illustrate some of the three dimensional objects under the Archives care.
