Service

SERVICE! It is what we are all about in Beta Eta. In the past, we have been continuing some traditional service projects as well as trying some new ones. Feel free to send ideas for new projects or use them for your own organization.

High School Bands Women Advancement Colloquium and Showcase Scholarship Program  - Tau Beta Sigma was founded to promote the enrichment of women in collegiate bands. One way to ensure the continued participation of women in collegiate bands is to build a strong foundation for young women in high school bands through mentoring, encouragement, and enthusiasm for her respective talent.  By providing high school bands women the opportunity to interact with collegiate bands women in both a professional and informal atmosphere, the young women will be further motivated to pursue participation in band activities throughout their college careers.  The sisters of the Beta Eta chapter of Tau Beta Sigma will act as mentors to local high school junior and senior bands women over a period of time to encourage the pursuit of higher education, participation in band activities, community service, and personal development.

Blood Drive  - During the Spring 2006 semester, the sisters of Beta Eta will be holding their first blood drive in coordination with the Red Cross.  Please check back for the official date!

Girl Scout Music Badge - During the past three Spring Semesters, Beta Eta has hosted a music badge workshop for local Girl Scout, and will be hosting another one this spring! We sing songs, play musical chairs, finger paint, make maracas, and dance. It's a lot of fun for both Sisters and Girl Scouts alike.

Pasta Dinner - Once a semester, we make dinner for our Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Beta Eta provides spaghetti for all, as well as drinks and yummy desserts. We serve them after practice and it gives them a chance to socialize a bit.

Baked Goods - We typically make baked goods once a semester for one of the ensembles. In past semesters, we've made food for the Community Band, Jazz bands, and University bands. Sisters each donated some kind of baked good for the occasion. There were muffins, cookies, brownies, and fudge. Beta Eta can cook!

Ice Cream Social - Following the lines of food, we usually hold a social event for the Concert Band. It is held during the early part of the semester, so its members have a chance to get to know each other. We dish out ice cream after practice and watch them relax and enjoy. We've also used this service project for the Jazz Ensembles in the Spring.

Thanksgiving Food Drive - Every October into November, Beta Eta cleans out their cupboards in order to collect food for a local soup kitchen. The Sisters aren't the only ones who help out. Members of the bands also donate a few items to help give everyone a happy holiday!

Stuffed Animal Drive - We also initiated a stuffed animal drive. The sisters collect new and gently used stuffed animals and donated them to a local children's hospital, where we hope they will be put to good use and brighten a child's day.

Survival Kits - At the beginning of Early Week, Beta Eta supplies survival kits to the members of the Marching Band. These typically include, snack foods, water bottles, paper clips and various other things to get the band through the busy week ahead. We also distribute Finals Survival Kits to one of the band ensembles at the end of the semester. These kits are full of snack food, candy, pens, and usually something fun to provide a little treat when a study break is needed.

Among Other Things... - Other things that we have done to help support the bands here at the University of Maryland include giving out candy at Halloween and compiling a list of tutoring help for band members incase they need it.
