What is Ultimate?
![]()
Ultimate is a fast-paced, 7-player, team sport where everyone is a quarterback and everyone is a receiver. It is played with a disc (frisbee) on a field 40 yds wide and 70 yds long, with two endzones each 25 yds deep. The object of the game is to catch the disc in the opposing team's endzone. Ultimate is unique in that it is completely self-refereed.
A point starts with the two teams in their endzones. One side pulls the disc (makes a long throw), and the other team picks it up and passes it down the field. When a player makes a catch, he has to stop running and establish a pivot foot (much like basketball). He then throws the disc to one of his teammates. If the disc hits the ground or a defensive player catches it, there's a turn, and the opposing team gains possession of the disc.
Ultimate is played by amateur athletes in 40 different countries - over 100,000 people in the United States alone. Games range from Sunday afternoon pick-up to highly competitive national tournaments. Devotees include life-long athletes and absolute beginners. We are proud to be among the fanatics.
If something more recreational is your style, join UMD staff and students for indoor pick-up ultimate! We play in the HHP basketball gym on weekdays at midday. For more information, please contact amylouiseanderson(at)yahoo.com.
